Connecticut (January 2014)

In January we took advantage of the long weekend for Martin Luther King Day and ventured north to Connecticut. We stayed in Ledyard, just north of Mystic.

We stopped off in Essex on the way.

Home of the Griswold Inn!

Gemma had a hot buttered rum.

We found a barbershop; I think we woke the old boy up.

Our little B&B in Ledyard:

Then on to Mystic. It is the setting of the iconic 80's film 'Mystic Pizza' with Julia Roberts.

Naturally the film is played on a constant loop.

Because of the film, we had high hopes for their pizza...and were sorely disappointed! It was no better than a Pizza Hut effort.

Still, the deep-fried pickles were pretty good:

The town itself is nice.

A short ride away was Stonington, a quaint little town.

The scenery in general was really pretty.

Our drive home took in a few detours, checking out some more of the state.

In New Haven we parked up and had a quick mooch around Yale University. The town itself is nice, as is the university, but the inland area just outside of the town is pretty rough. Basically, the nice bits of Connecticut are on the coast.
